Read Around the Planet 2012 Registration Now Open

2Learn.ca is excited to announce that Read Around the Planet (RAP) 2012 registration officially opens December 1, 2011 and closes on January 13th, 2012.  Alberta's participation in last year's Read Around the Planet 2011 international collaboration included engagements from exactly 100 schools from across our province.  Let's see if we can exceed that number this year!

Please find below all registration details and the instructions regarding this project.  This information is kindly received from Sue Porter, TWICE CAPspace Coordinator, and includes excellent resources to walk you and your technical staff through the process of registering.

2Learn.ca is continuing to support TWICE.cc through training and testing services to Alberta teachers.  As Alberta's Site Verifier for TWICE CAPspace, please contact me via email (Jocelyn@2Learn.ca) or telephone (403-370-0230) with any questions you have or technological support you may require.

Wishing all the best,
Jocelyn

2. You can also see your registration under My Projects, My Events.
3. Partner matches will be sent out the last week of JANUARY - please be patient.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Reminder: Collaborations vs. Projects
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Remember there are two kinds of connections between classes in CAPspace:
   1. Collaborations:
       Teacher created
       Post under Projects, Collaborations
       Find your own partner
       Create your own support materials

   2. Projects (or Matching Events, i.e., Read Around the Planet):
       Centrally managed and coordinated
Dates & times are already set
A partner class is provided for you
Support materials are already created for you
You sign up for ALL the times you can do; when the match is run, partners & times are assigned

We hope you can participate this year in TWICE\\\'s signature event, Read Around the Planet, which was the event that started CAPspace!

Webinar Format:
This webinar series will be offered at no cost to Alberta educators.  To participate, you will simply require the use of an internet-enabled computer with speakers and a microphone.  Although not a requirement, the use of a headset with attached microphone is highly recommended to avoid any possible audio feedback.

January 25th, 2012 (3:45 - 4:30 p.m.) for Teachers
Do you often wonder if students are taking away the sought after information after using interactive websites? In this session participants will be shown tools that encourage student reflection after engaging in an interactive website. How these tools can be used for formative assessments of student learning, relative to curricular outcomes, will be demonstrated. This webinar is the first in a series of three Alberta Assessment Consortium/2Learn.ca Education Society webinars.

AAC/2Learn.ca Webinar #2: Visual Literacy and Questioning Techniques
February 1st, 2012 (3:45 - 4:30 p.m.) for Teachers
Interpreting the message of media through effective questioning is a key Visual Literacy skill.  This session will show how to source curriculum-based images and use them in your class with questioning strategies that will engage your students in meaningful learning and serve as opportunities for formative assessment.  This webinar is the second in a series of three Alberta Assessment Consortium/2Learn.ca Education Society webinars.

Student VC Event: Structures and Design with DiscoverE

February 13th, 2012 (1:00 - 2:30 p.m.) for Grade 3 Science Students and Teachers

The 2Learn.ca Education Society is excited to partner with DiscoverE to offer eight videoconferencing events throughout the 2011-2012 school year.  DiscoverE brings high impact, exciting and engaging videoconferencing workshops integrating science, engineering and technology.

This workshop is focused on building with a variety of materials. Students will learn about different materials, and apply that knowledge to understanding when and where those materials are used.  They will then learn to select appropriate materials and apply simple designs to make a strong structure.
(curricular objectives 3-3, 3-5, 3-8)

This workshop will be divided into two segments:
Segment #1 (45 minutes) - Four classes will have the opportunity join DiscoverE to participate in exciting demonstrations and discussions of the curricular content with scientists and engineers from DiscoverE. This segment offers an excellent unit introduction or review to the Program of Studies curricular outcomes.  At the end of this segment, three classes will disconnect from the videoconference, and one remaining class will stay connected  for Segment #2.
Segment #2 (45 minutes) - During this Point2Point VC workshop segment, each student of the participant school will have the opportunity to complete a hands-on project. Materials required during Segment #2 will be provided at no cost by the 2Learn.ca Education Society, and mailed directly to the participating school by DiscoverE.
