 Meet-A-Mentor Series

For Junior High Students

4-Part Series Beginning February 9, 2010

This University of Alberta WISEST (Women in Scholarship, Engineering, Science and Technology) initiative will provide a mentorship program to rural junior high students by means of videoconferencing, highlighting the areas of Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET).

We are looking for student groups (15 to 35 students/group) from four schools in rural Alberta to take part in this four part series, covering a variety of disciplines in SET, each session airing live monthly.  Classes or interested groups of grades 7 to 9 students interested in the SET areas are invited to take part in the series.  All activities will make use of materials found in a school setting.

Each Meet-a-Mentor session will involve dynamic speaker teams from a specific discipline, including mentors from a combination of academia, government and industry

The sessions will consist of:

•·         an introduction to the session topic

•·         a hands-on activity and discussion

•·         an interactive question and answer period

Tuesday February 9 -- Chemistry

Thursday March 18 -- Engineering

Thursday April 15 -- Biology

Wednesday May 12 -- Interdisciplinary

Please note:

Participants must be able to attend at least 3 of 4 sessions, including the final session.
