Meet-A-Mentor Series
For Junior High Students
4-Part Series Beginning February 9, 2010
This University of Alberta WISEST (Women in Scholarship, Engineering, Science and Technology) initiative will provide a mentorship program to rural junior high students by means of videoconferencing, highlighting the areas of Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET).
We are looking for student groups (15 to 35 students/group) from four schools in rural Alberta to take part in this four part series, covering a variety of disciplines in SET, each session airing live monthly. Classes or interested groups of grades 7 to 9 students interested in the SET areas are invited to take part in the series. All activities will make use of materials found in a school setting.
Each Meet-a-Mentor session will involve dynamic speaker teams from a specific discipline, including mentors from a combination of academia, government and industry.
The sessions will consist of:
•· an introduction to the session topic
•· a hands-on activity and discussion
•· an interactive question and answer period
Tuesday February 9 -- Chemistry
Thursday March 18 -- Engineering
Thursday April 15 -- Biology
Wednesday May 12 -- Interdisciplinary
Registration deadline: Friday January 22nd @ 4:00p.m.
Please note:
Participants must be able to attend at least 3 of 4 sessions, including the final session.
Each session will take place from 12:00 to 1:00p.m.
