Special Opportunity: Student Science Experiments VC Series
Videoconference Series Details:
Classes will join scientists from the WISEST Meet-a-Mentor program with the University of Alberta as they share a series of hands-on, student-focused science experiments relevant to the Alberta Program of Studies, through the series of four exciting videoconferencing events with your students.

This event series is open solely to classes who commit to participating in all four VC activities.

Students who participate in all four videoconferences in the series will receive a Certificate of Student Achievement from 2Learn.ca and the WISEST Meet-a-Mentor Program.

Teachers who engage their students in all four videoconferences in the series will receive a Professional Certificate for their professional portfolio, and will have any costs associated in the acquisition of any required resources reimbursed by the 2Learn.ca Education Society.

Curricular Links: Grades 5 - 9 Science, Health, Physical Education Students and Teachers
  • Gr. 5 - 9 Physical Education: Health Benefits, Movement Activities
  • Gr. 5 - 9 Health and Wellness: Human Body, Wellness Choices
  • Gr. 5 Science: Classroom Chemistry
  • Gr. 8 Science: Cells and Systems; Mix and Flow of Matter

Registration Details:
This special event series is open for only six (6) Alberta classes to participate! Registration for the series is first come, first served, with registration preference provided to teachers who commit to participating in all four VC events.

Registration Closes: REGISTRATION FULL.

Videoconference #1: Biology Experiments
Series #1: December 8, 2011 (1:00 - 2:00 p.m.) - REGISTRATION FULL
Series #2: December 8, 2011 (2:00 - 3:00 p.m.) - REGISTRATION FULL
Event Details: Students will interact with scientists to complete experiments related to pupil reflexes, eye movements, neurone reflexes and our body's immune system. Promises to be an "eye-opening" experience!

Videoconference #2 - Chemistry Experiments
Series #1: February 28, 2012 (1:00 - 2:00 p.m.) - REGISTRATION FULL
Series #2: February 28, 2012 (2:00 - 3:00 p.m.) - REGISTRATION FULL
Event Details: Students will work with scientists via VC to complete experiments related to acids and bases, ending in an "explosive" time!

Videoconference #3 - Engineering Experiments
Series #1: March 13, 2012 (1:00 - 2:00 p.m.) - REGISTRATION FULL
Series #2: March 13, 2012 (2:00 - 3:00 p.m.) - REGISTRATION FULL
Event Details: Students will learn through hands-on experiments the importance of understanding fluid viscosity and how it relates to tubes.

Videoconference #4 - Interdisciplinary Experiments
Series #1: April 17, 2012 (1:00 - 2:00 p.m.) - REGISTRATION FULL
Series #2: April 17, 2012 (2:00 - 3:00 p.m.) - REGISTRATION FULL
Event Details: How do the previous three biology, chemistry and engineering videoconferences inter-relate? In the final VC event, all the pieces will come together.  Students will combine the outcomes of the previous three science experiments in a concept of "Exercise Physiology".  Students will conduct experiments during this videoconference to learn how:
  • neurology controls our circulatory and respiratory system (directly linking the Biology experiments from VC #1)
  • exercise affects the acids and bases of our body (directly linking to the Chemistry experiments from VC #2)
  • our heart is an efficient engineering masterpiece (directly linking to the Engineering experiments from VC #3)
