Student VC Event: Structures and Design with DiscoverE

February 13th, 2012 (1:00 - 2:30 p.m.) for Grade 3 Science Students and Teachers

The 2Learn.ca Education Society is excited to partner with DiscoverE to offer eight videoconferencing events throughout the 2011-2012 school year.  DiscoverE brings high impact, exciting and engaging videoconferencing workshops integrating science, engineering and technology.

This workshop is focused on building with a variety of materials. Students will learn about different materials, and apply that knowledge to understanding when and where those materials are used.  They will then learn to select appropriate materials and apply simple designs to make a strong structure.

(curricular objectives 3-3, 3-5, 3-8)

This workshop will be divided into two segments:
Segment #1 (45 minutes) - Four classes will have the opportunity join DiscoverE to participate in exciting demonstrations and discussions of the curricular content with scientists and engineers from DiscoverE. This segment offers an excellent unit introduction or review to the Program of Studies curricular outcomes.  At the end of this segment, three classes will disconnect from the videoconference, and one remaining class will stay connected  for Segment #2.
Segment #2 (45 minutes) - During this Point2Point VC workshop segment, each student of the participant school will have the opportunity to complete a hands-on project. Materials required during Segment #2 will be provided at no cost by the 2Learn.ca Education Society, and mailed directly to the participating school by DiscoverE.
