Videoconference Series Details:
Classes will join specialist presenters from Alberta Parks as they share a series of exciting, live, interactive videoconferencing events, relevant to the Alberta program of Studies. This engaging pilot program of events connects classrooms, teachers, Ecosystems, Fish & Wildlife, and our Parks across Alberta. This series is provided at no cost to Alberta participants by the 2Learn.ca Education Society Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation – Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park, Dinosaur Provincial Park, Beauvais Lake Provincial Park and Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park National Historic Site, Head Smashed-In Buffalo Jump Interpretive Centre, Remington Carriage Museum, along with Alberta Sustainable Resource Development, Parks Canada – Waterton Lakes National Park, Prairie Conservation Forum, and University of Lethbridge.
Students who participate in all six videoconferences in the series will receive a Certificate of Student Achievement from 2Learn.ca and participating organizations.
Teachers who engage their students in all six videoconferences in the series will be provided with a Teacher Resource Package from the participating organizations and will receive a Professional Certificate for their professional portfolio.

This package of six videoconferencing events will be offered in two series, "Virtual Parks VC Series #1" and "Virtual Parks VC Series #2".
Each series has only four (4) openings for Alberta classes to participate!
Registration for each series is first come, first served.
By registering for a series, teachers are committing to participate in all six VC events in the series.
Registration Closes: December 1, 2011 @4:00 p.m. (or until we reach registration cap)

Videoconference #1: The Dinosaur Provincial Park Virtual Excursion
with Fred Hammer, Alberta Parks Educator

Take a trip deep into dinosaur country on this video-conference-based excursion intoDinosaur Provincial Park. As you are guided through the rugged landscape of the badlands you will discover the fossil remains of dinosaurs and other ancient organisms learn how the badlands were formed, encounter some of wildlife that make the park their home, and be struck with awe at the incredible beauty of this alien landscape. Interactive video includes a breath-taking fly-over of the park and an interview with a real paleontologist.

As we connect to learn the role and general characteristics of the Cypress Hills forests, we will also discover evidence of wildlife and the research and investigative methods used to learn more about cougars and other creatures that live within this protected area.

Videoconference #4: It’s Not Easy Being Green
with Heidi Eijgel, Alberta Parks Educator

Will your students know what to do if they see a Northern Leopard Frog? Join environmental educator, Heidi Eijgel, via video conference, as she tells the story of the northern leopard frog's reintroduction to a wetland in Beauvais Lake Provincial Park. It is a story of rare species, fragile ecosystems and dedicated staff and volunteers. It is also a story of amazing success, but one in precarious balance. The survival of a rare species in one of Alberta's parks is dependant on many factors - discover them by taking part in this EDVC which will prepare students and volunteer parents for the wetland ecosystem field study at Beauvais Lake Provincial Park.

Learn how the First Nations people lived in harmony with nature and our Mother Earth. Learn about the tools and technologies that evolved with the buffalo culture. Explore camp life during the buffalo hunt.
Videoconference #6: Deep Roots - Exploring Alberta’s Grasslands
with Heidi Eijgel and Justin McKeown, Parks Canada Educators
February 15, 2012 (10:30 - 11:30 a.m.)
Take your class on a tour through the dynamic grassland ecosystem of Alberta. Burrowing owls, badgers, prairie crocus and many other species help highlight this diverse landscape that is teeming with life. Students will meet a rancher and First Nations' educator and hear their stories of how their history and lives are "rooted" in the grassland. Join our presenter as we uncover the wonderful world of Alberta's grasslands. You may even look at the grasslands in a whole new way!
