Collaborative FLL Project 2009
The First Lego League Alberta competition occurs in the last week of January 2010 at NAIT, in Edmonton. This full day Lego science competition is probably the most exciting and motivating activity teachers can plan for a team of grade 4-9 students. First Lego League activities involve teams of students solving theme-based challenges and then presenting their solution to judges, while having their Lego Robot compete against other teams. Following a core value of "Gracious Professionalism", the FLL is simply an experience that science teachers should not pass up.
The goal of the Collaborative FLL Project 2009 is to connect teachers and their students in the support the development of a FLL team in their classroom or school. The project involves connecting teams to each other via an online student network or videoconferencing to share their Lego building solutions for FLL tasks that are part of the 2010 competition. Participating teachers will be provided with a complete FLL registration and Field kit, with the goal of developing a team to participate in January 2010. Teams are responsible for supplying their own RCX or NXT Lego Mindstorms kit, as well as presenting their task solution to the project group on December 16th, 2009
Number of Participant Teachers: Twelve
Prerequisite: Lego Mindstorms RCX or NXT Kit.
Project Timeline: November 1 - December 16th, 2009
For more Information or to Register for this project, contact the Project Coordinator, Nathaniel Ostashewski at Nathaniel@2Learn.ca.
Robotics and Hands-on Activities in Your Classroom
Start Date: October 1, 2009
Course ID: ROB0902
Instructor: Nathaniel Ostashewski
Information or to Register Email: Nathaniel@2Learn.ca
Prerequisite: Access to Lego Mindstorms RCX or NXT Kit
Lego robotics in the classroom is an excellent way to get students excited and motivated about science and technology. This 2Learn.ca Courselet walks teachers through an exploration of how to introduce and support Lego robotics in their classroom. Participating teachers should have access to a Lego Mindstorms RCX or NXT kit during the Courselet. One key deliverable of the Courselet is an understanding of how to utilize First Lego League and other online resources to support problem-based science activities. An overview of the FIRST robotics competitions completes this courselet designed for teachers with little or lots of robotics experience. If you want to get your students excited about science and technology using Lego in the classroom - this is the Courselet for you!
Lego Robotics and First Lego League in Your Classroom
Start Date: November 1, 2009
Course ID: ROB0905
Instructor: Nathaniel Ostashewski
Information or to Register Email: Nathaniel@2Learn.ca
Prerequisite: Lego Mindstorms RCX or NXT Kit
Lego robotics in the classroom is an excellent way to get students excited and motivated about science and technology. This 2Learn.ca Courselet is for teachers who are interested in participating or learning about the First Lego League competition (FLL). FLL has grown over the past 10 years to an international science and technology phenomenon that is being done in schools, community groups, and student clubs! No prior FLL or Lego robotics experience for teachers is necessary wanting to take this courselet, but participating teachers need access to a Lego Mindstorms RCX or NXT kit. At the conclusion of this Courselet, teachers will have developed implementation strategies for the Lego robotics and FLL materials in their classroom, even to the point of supporting a FLL team to take to the Alberta FLL competition in the last week of January 2010.
